CCS Architecture, in collaboration with the restaurant consultant Adam Block, has created a new gastronomic destination at the world-renowned Sandton Sun in Johannesburg, South Africa.  The project reinvents the existing dining venues on the sixth level, where the 334-room hotel meets the local business district. The new setting, encompassing 15,000 square feet, brings South Africa’s colors, materials, and natural daylight into the center of the hotel.  Locally sourced zebra wood, oak, quartzite and sandstone root the project to Johannesburg.  Fire and water express the natural elements. The interior design meshes with the Sandton Sun’s new sustainable, farm-to-table food concept and brings the hotel up-to-date relative to properties in other cosmopolitan cities.

San Bar and the informal Business Lounge are open to the hotel’s soaring atrium.  Adjacent is San, an all-day restaurant; VIN mmx, a fine dining restaurant; and San Market. An overhead canopy, made of stainless steel and wood, adds intimacy while maintaining the dramatic nature of the atrium space. A photographic mural, composed of hundreds of large, South African images printed on brushed aluminum, wraps the perimeter of the atrium (just above the canopy structure) enhancing continuity and the sense of place.
