RIVERWALK | RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA

An oasis in Riyadh that is a neighborhood gathering place for dining and shopping.

Although a commercial collection of shops and cafes, it is designed to have a public sense of place that is a hub for the neighborhood of Al Taawon and as a destination for people from other parts of Riyadh.

A one-block, mixed-use development that is a collection of shops, cafes, and offices focused on a square for a public sense of place.

Conceptually and literally it is meant to be an oasis; an open-air place surrounding water and grassy islands in a dense and arid city.

By being open air and with palm trees, grass, and spaces to congregate, Riverwalk is meant to feel public and for the community.

Each end has an welcoming gateway, which gives the project two facades and strong connections to the neighborhood in two directions. The shops not only face the square, but also face outward into the neighborhood to establish a street front where one did not exist.

The client is a first-time real estate developer who travels widely and decided to bring something new to the burgeoning city of Riyadh with its young population seeking something home-grown, yet new.

The shops and cafes are small scale to create a more diverse mix of uses that would be afforded with larger shops.  This also creates amore affordable opportunity for your entrepreneurs and startups.
