PRESS LOUNGE

The Press Lounge is an inviting rooftop lounge located in the Ink48 Hotel, a former printing house located where 11th Avenue meets 48th Street in New York City. Located on the 16th floor, the rooftop venue has panoramic views on all sides, from Times Square to the Hudson River. CCS created a clean, modern transparent glass box that allows unobstructed views of the city skyline. A large bi-fold glass door was custom designed and fabricated so that it completely opens up to the views beyond. This addition was created to address the owners need to expand the indoor /outdoor activity for guests in various types of weather.

The glass room at Press Lounge allows for two things: In the summer, the front façade completely opens up and acts as additional outdoor space. In cooler months and unforgiving weather, the space is warm and cozy. With the addition of electric heaters and the modern fireorb, guests can continue to enjoy the dramatic views from the rooftop throughout the winter while staying warm and protected from the wind.

THE “FIREORB”

The mobile fireplace, or “fireorb” was a custom design created specifically for this project as a result of the clients desire to put a fire element on the roof. As per New York City building code, gas fireplaces and firepits are not allowed on rooftops. We reached out to the fireorb company out of Chicago since we had used their products before, such as wood-burning ones in homes, and also the liquid fuel (eco-friendly, denatured alcohol) burning ones we had used in restaurants.

For this particular project it needed to be mobile, so that it could be centered in the room most of the time, but also moved as needed for events or for a large cocktail party was standing room only. We collaborated closely with the fabricator using the basic original design to come up with this new mobile concept.  Using the original flying saucer shape and the multiple openings which can rotate, we also designed a ledge surrounding it where drinks could sit. That surface then skirts down and hides casters underneath, allowing it to be wheeled around.  Since the fireorb is vent less, it does not require a flu, however we wanted to preserve that element and brought the flu up to about 6 feet. It’s fabricated in brushed stainless steel, creating a futuristic look that matches well with the dramatic setting.
